Since env has multiple functions, these insertion mutants can be used to study the effect of altering env function on viral infectivity and pathogenicity. Our studies have also focused on the regulation of the LTR promoter in the early phase of infection.
The transcription factors involved in the regulation of LTR and other promoters have been studied and shown to include host and virus-encoded products. Their sequence specificities for binding have been determined by oligonucleotide footprinting.
